Clemente “Memé” Sanchez
Clemente Sanchez • NM STATE SENATOR | DISTRICT 30
Clemente was born and raised in Western Valencia County on the Land Grant community of Cubero which is now located in Cibola County. Clemente attended grade school at St. Joseph Elementary where he learned the values of leadership, loyalty, fairness and honesty. Clemente graduated from Laguna Acoma Junior- Senior High School in 1977. In 1981 Clemente earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Eastern New Mexico University with a double major in Business Administration and Personnel Administration and a Minor in Accounting. A year later Clemente earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from New Mexico Highlands University.
After twenty-five years Clemente retired as the Director of the New Mexico State University Grants Campus Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Prior to directing the affairs of the SBDC, Clemente had a business career with extensive experience in auditing private and public entities, including tribal governments, tax consulting and as a financial controller for the Pueblo of Laguna.
After retiring from NMSU Clemente became the President & CEO and Chairman of the Board of the Bank of New Mexico, a local community bank. Clemente currently serves as Senior Vice President/Senior Banking Officer of TBK Bank in New Mexico. Clemente was elected to the New Mexico State Senate in 2012 and serves as Chairman of Corporations and Transportation Committee and is a member of the Rules Committee, Committee’s Committee and Legislative Council.
Clemente’s greatest satisfaction comes from helping others and being a public servant. Clemente is involved in numerous civic organizations and has been active in youth sports as a little league baseball coach and also coached track and cross country at the high school and college level. Clemente is an avid runner, a hobby he has maintained since running track and cross country in high school and college.
Family life is important to Clemente, who is the youngest of 13 children. Clemente and his wife of 43+ years, Georgia, who is from the Pueblo of Acoma have a son and daughter as well as four grandchildren and a grandson. They are also the proud dog parents of Ricky.
